Muumi Baby Diapers

Diaper skin-friendliness and use

Are Muumi Baby diapers skin-friendly? Are they suitable for sensitive skin?

Skin-friendliness is one of our highest priorities, along with environmental responsibility. We make every effort to ensure that our diapers are suitable for babies with even the most sensitive skin.

The skin-friendliness of a diaper consists of many different factors, such as the materials used in production and how well the diaper fits. The raw materials used in our diapers are carefully selected, and we use only soft and safe materials. Wherever possible, we favour Nordic raw materials suppliers. We do not add any unnecessary chemicals such as lotions or fragrances to our diapers. The main raw material used in our diapers is cellulose from Finland, which is entirely chlorine-free – and therefore dioxin-free, too. The cellulose we use is bleached not with chlorine, but with 100% pure oxygen. This is a safer and skin-friendlier option for your child’s skin, and it is also better for the environment.

Muumi Baby diapers do not contain any allergenic agents such as latex, glyphosate, formaldehydes or phthalates. How well a diaper fits is also very important for skin-friendliness. If a diaper fits well, it will not irritate or rub your baby’s skin. The fabric materials and plastics used in Muumi Baby diapers are extremely breathable to let your baby’s skin breathe even when wearing the diaper. The carefully selected materials absorb liquids, keeping your baby’s skin dry and avoiding contact with pee and poo for too long.

We engage in continuous work to develop increasingly skin-friendly diapers. Muumi Baby diapers have long been made in cooperation with the Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation, and we will continue to collaborate in the future. Our diapers are also dermatologically tested.

What is the correct diaper size for my baby?

The correct size of diaper and a good fit are key to skin-friendliness. A correctly sized diaper will not irritate or rub your baby’s skin. Here is a link to our article containing more information about choosing the right size of diaper.

What causes diaper rash?

Diaper rash is usually the sum of many factors. Diaper rash is a well-known skin condition featuring irritation caused by faeces and urine, but it also involves a baby’s diet and any changes to it. Another important factor is how often a baby’s diaper is changed. Diapers should be changed around 5-6 times per day to prevent the baby’s skin from being in contact with pee or poo for too long. Remember, however, that diaper rash or redness of the skin in the diaper area can occur no matter how careful you are. Sometimes the skin reaction can be caused by diarrhoea or medication. In such cases, it is good to change diapers even more frequently. Faeces and diarrhoea in particular contain various substances that irritate the skin and may cause diaper rash.

Muumi Baby diapers are made from breathable materials which give the skin a chance to breathe even while wearing the diaper. Our diapers also meet the very stringent standards set by the Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for materials used to manufacture diapers.

A good way to prevent diaper rash is to leave your baby’s diaper off for a few hours a day.  It is also important to let your baby’s skin dry before putting on a new diaper. Diaper rash should be treated with diaper rash creams. If the skin is very irritated and red, we recommend consulting a doctor who can make sure that the skin is not infected.

Remember to potty train your baby sooner rather than later. This is important for both your baby’s skin and the impact on the environment.

How can I dispose of or recycle Muumi Baby diapers?

Muumi Baby diapers can be burnt at incineration plants, but not all diapers are suitable for waste-to-energy disposal. Muumi Baby diapers are completely chlorine-free, which means that they can be disposed of as waste-to-energy waste and incinerated, because they do not release harmful emissions into the atmosphere. It is not recommended to incinerate diapers which contain chlorine, as doing so can create toxic gases. Some incineration plants refuse to accept any diapers at all, as some of our competitors still use chlorine-bleached diapers. We recommend that you ask your local incineration plant whether they accept chlorine-free diapers for incineration. We do not, however, recommend that you burn Muumi Baby diapers yourself, as household burning does not reach a sufficiently high temperature.

You can also throw away Muumi Baby diapers in normal household waste. However you dispose of Muumi Baby diapers, we can assure you that Muumi Baby diapers are an environmentally responsible choice among other disposable diapers. We have designed the diapers’ life cycle to burden the environment as little as possible. The main raw material in Muumi Baby diapers is biodegradable cellulose, which is made from Finnish FSC-certified forests. We always aim to favour Nordic raw materials manufacturers, and we do not add any unnecessary chemicals, such as fragrances or lotions, to our diapers. The diapers are packed in biodegradable bags that can be reused as biowaste bags, for example. Muumi Baby diapers are made in Finland, keeping the distances from factory to store shelves short. We want to make sure that pure and beautiful nature can be enjoyed by future generations.

How can I give feedback about Muumi Baby diapers?

How the diapers are made

What are Muumi Baby diapers made from? What do they contain?

The main absorbent material used in our diapers is pure, 100% FSC®-certified cellulose from Finnish forests. The cellulose we use is bleached with oxygen, making it 100% chlorine-free. The absorbent core is wrapped in non-woven fabric, which has water-permeable and repellent properties.  A small number of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) are mixed in with the cellulose in the absorbent layer. The superabsorbent we use is completely proven safe and allergy-tested material which have been used in children’s diapers for more than 20 years. We continually strive to develop our diapers to be more eco-friendly and that’s why we use significantly less superabsorbent than many leading brands. Despite this, our diapers are effective with a structure that distributes moisture evenly through the diaper and keeps skin dry.

Our diapers’ surface and outer layers, which come into contact with the baby’s skin, are made from soft and skin-friendly material. The interior is polypropylene non-woven fabric and the exterior is made of breathable polyethylene plastic and a non-woven fabric blend of polypropylene and polyethylene.

The diaper fastenings, such as tapes, are made from polypropylene and polyethylene, and the leak guards are made from polypropylene plastic. All of the glues used in the diapers are FDA-approved hot glues, which are the same glues used in the food industry to glue e.g. chocolate wrappers.

Muumi Baby diapers are a carefree and safe choice for your child, as all of the raw materials used to make them fulfil the stringent criteria for chemicals set by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation. Muumi Baby diapers never contain fragrances, dyes or lotions, which could irritate the baby’s skin.

Are Muumi Baby diapers biodegradable?

The main raw material used in Muumi Baby diapers is cellulose, which is completely biodegradable. Other materials which are not biodegradable, such as non-woven fabrics, are also used in the diapers.

There is currently no fully biodegradable disposable diaper on the market, but the share of biodegradable materials is increasing, and new, more environmentally responsible materials are continually being developed.

When considering the environmental burden of diapers, it’s worth considering the diaper’s entire life cycle, from raw material to manufacture and disposal. Muumi Baby diapers are made from carefully selected pure and safe raw materials. We always strive to choose Nordic raw materials suppliers. The Finnish cellulose used in our Muumi Baby diapers is completely chlorine-free, as the cellulose we used is bleached using 100% pure oxygen. This is the safest solution for both the environment and for babies’ skin. We must also consider that almost no waste disposal plants accept biowaste that contains human waste. The reason for this is the safety of the personnel at waste disposal plants. Muumi Baby diapers are chlorine-free, so they can be disposed of as waste-to-energy waste. Muumi Baby diapers are packed in a packaging bag made of 25% recycled plastic, which you can sort for plastic recycling.

What impact does diaper manufacturing have on the environment and climate?

Our production process produces no landfill waste; all of our waste is either recycled or incinerated to produce new energy. In addition, the manufacturing process of Muumi Baby diapers does not release any harmful emissions into the air or waterways. Our production uses only certified hydroelectricity and solar power, which does not release unnecessary carbon dioxide emissions into the environment. We also use the heat generated in the production process to heat our production factory. Muumi Baby diapers are made in Finland, keeping the distances from factory to store shelves and homes short. Remember to potty train your baby sooner rather than later. This is important for both your baby’s skin and the impact on the environment.

What makes our diapers eco-diapers?

Muumi Baby diapers differ from regular disposable diapers in many ways, except absorption capacity. The biggest differences include the raw materials used, as all diapers consist of a number of different materials. The raw materials used in Muumi Baby diapers are carefully selected and meet the stringent criteria of the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation. The manufacturing process of an eco-diaper also differs from that of a regular diaper in terms of the energy source used. Our Muumi Baby diapers’ production process only uses renewable and certified hydroelectricity, which does not release any harmful carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. The heat generated in the production process is used to heat our production factory. A third significant difference is the processing of production waste; our production produces no landfill waste whatsoever. Instead, we recycle it or incinerate it to produce new energy.

Do Muumi Baby diapers contain fragrances or lotions?

To us, skin-friendliness is one of the most important properties of a diaper. That’s why we only want to manufacture pure and soft diapers that are suitable for babies with even the most sensitive skin. Muumi Baby diapers do not contain any unnecessary chemicals. We do not add any fragrances, lotions or dyes to our diapers. Muumi Baby diapers are manufactured solely from carefully selected pure and safe materials. Muumi Baby diapers have been awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and have been approved by the Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation, which means that the materials used in our diapers and the manufacturing process meet the strict criteria set for these labels. However, we consider these criteria to be minimum requirements, and we continuously strive to develop our products to make them even safer. Keeping diapers as pure and free from additives as possible will continue to be one of our top priorities.

Where are Muumi Baby diapers made?

Muumi Baby diapers are made by Delipap Oy at Finland’s only diaper factory in Tammisaari.

How is the cellulose used in Muumi Baby diapers bleached?

The cellulose we use is 100% oxygen-bleached. This is a much safer option than chlorine-bleaching, both for your baby’s skin and the environment. It also makes the diaper dioxin-free. There are chlorine-bleached diapers on the market that may irritate the child’s skin, and traces of dioxins have been found in these diapers. The disposal of chlorine-bleached diapers is also more complicated, as they cannot be disposed of as waste-to-energy waste. In addition, the cellulose we use does not contain any optical brighteners. We want to keep our diapers are pure and free from chemicals as possible.
